Safeguarding children and adults at risk of abuse should be an essential part of the day-to-day running of voluntary and community sector groups and organisations. However, we know there are challenges for these groups, including:

Understanding what good safeguarding practice means, and how it applies to specific activities

Getting staff, volunteers and trustees on board with safeguarding so that everyone understands their responsibilities

Finding good training and peer support opportunities that are relevant to the voluntary sector

Keeping up with changes in legislation and initiatives e.g. Prevent and Child Sexual Exploitation, and linking in with Hull City Council safeguarding boards and strategies

Writing and maintaining policies and procedures that are easy to understand and relevant to a specific organisation/project, rather than relying on templates

Having someone who is knowledgeable and impartial to discuss safeguarding challenges with

Sector Connect Hull can provide support, advice and guidance for any voluntary, community or social enterprise organisation on safeguarding. Unless a disclosure of abuse is made, we will work with you in confidence to improve your safeguarding practice and keep the sector up to date on relevant changes. Support includes:

One-to-one support to discuss projects and activities for groups working in community, sports and faith settings, with help to understand safeguarding responsibilities

Training that is specifically focused on voluntary and community sector provision

Help to carry out Safeguarding Self Audits to assess strengths and areas for improvement

Support with developing and writing policies and procedures

One-to-one support for Safeguarding Officers or people with responsibility for safeguarding

Peer support meetings and facilitated networking opportunities to enable groups to share their safeguarding challenges

Communication with the sector on new legislation, changes to local strategies, and working in partnership with statutory/public sector partners
